The Freedom Tower has given a new name, the One World Trade Center and is the new building of the New World Trade center located in Lower Manhattan, New York. The towers are located in the north west of the 16 acre World Trade Center site. The construction of the plaza after finalizing the foot prints and the design was began on April 2006 and the port Authority rendered it the One World Trade center in March 2009. Upon completion One World Trade Center will be tallest building in the United States.
Along with One World Trade Center there are going to be three more buildings but these buildings will be lower than the One World Trade Center. The Port Authority has tried to forget the injury that New York gained on 9 / 11 by making a new World Trade Center and showing the world that they are not afraid of any terrorists attack and the American Nation can stand in front of any difficulty and can bear any pain and can stand again to face any more hardships. But this time the design will not have the faults that were present in the Twin Towers.
But this may not happen again as after the terroristic activity on World Trade Center the security measures are stricter than ever. The architectural design of World Trade center includes its height which is 1,776 ft and a roof of 1,368 ft and the area of top floor is 1,314 ft. As a whole there will be 105 floors of the One World Trade Center that is 2 floors less than the original World Trade Center and this is just one tower whereas there were two towers in the old World Trade Center.
The World Trade Center is no more and its stories are left behind. Now if we have a look at its place we can never imagine that once a huge building stood here. And it will be real hard to construct a whole new World Trade Center.
The World Trade Center was hit by two planes on September 11, 2001. The building was burning with flame and only smoke could be seen as far as anyone can see. Sky high flames were burning. The first plane hit the North tower in morning and after that the second plane hit the South Tower. But one thing must be noticed that both the planes hit the building on the upper floors and not the lower. But when the North tower started falling it started from the base. What made the Tower to start shattering into pieces from the base and not the top?
This is the question most criticizers raised after the incident of 9/11. According to the criticizers the building’s core was made of strong concrete and steel mixture and it is not possible that the planes hit the upper stories and the Towers start falling from the lower ones. Some says that it was a pre – planned act and bombs were planted in the World Trade Center. When the Planes hit it bombs blasted and the towers started falling. Someone was behind this entire act. May be Al – Qaida planted those bombs that even if they fail in their terrorist act they will still be able to destroy it. The second question the Criticizers raised was that if there were bombs planted at the base how is possible that FBI did not notice the incoming of such large amount of RDX in the city. These are the questions still unanswered
After the attack on World Trade Center thousands tons of debris was present at the site of the World Trade center, The Port Authorities cleared the debris in a few months and after that there were rumors that the Port Authority is going to redesign the World Trade Center. In 2002, 50 concepts of the redesign were proposed by an Architect Max who gave his concepts to redesign it but all of them were rejected but were still put in the Chelsea art gallery.
In late 2002, the LMDC held a competition where the architects were welcomed to give their ideas about the redesigning of the World Trade Center and six designs were took under consideration but were rendered “poor” depending upon the feedback of 5,000 New York residents who did not like the concepts. And then the LMDC announced and international open – study program.
In August 2002, the LMDC invited 21 Architecture and Engineering firms in order to redesign the World Trade Center. And then depending upon the ideas given by these firm they short – listed 7 finalists. These finalists were given a chance to better their design and after the re – submission of the design, the LMDC short listed 3 more finalists from them. And after deep consideration two out of the three finalists were given the project.
The redesigns of the two firms were good enough to be taken under consideration but still no work has been done on the site. But a memorial is present at the site of the World Trade Center. The Twin Towers were a majestic sign for the New York and the United States of America. And this was the only fault of it, it was chosen for the terroristic attack and around 5000 people were killed in this attack. Al – Qaida took revenge from America by destroying the Twin Towers and by the assassination of thousands of people and by destroying the largest trading center of America.
Osama – bin – Laden is a native of Saudi Arabia and is a rich man and is supposed to run this agency named Al – Qaida. Its purpose is to save Muslims against the brutality of other races. And its followers are called Taliban. And it is reported that they are hidden in the mountains of Afghanistan. That is why Afghanistan was attacked by America to clear the area from Taliban.
Al – Qaida chose the heart of New York to break the back bone of the United States and take its revenge. Osama – Bin – Laden told in his videos that it is revenge from the Government of United States due to their actions against the Muslims. It is also said there were relationships between ex – President George W. Bush and Osama – Bin – Laden before this incident and they were friends.
There are also some rumors that it was a pre – planned act and Al – Qaida is also a planned agency only to gain publicity and to fulfill the dreams of the United States of America of gaining access to the oil fills in Afghanistan.
Anyhow it is a debated unsolved, it is a mystery unsolved, no one is arrested yet only small Taliban are arrested and none of the leaders like Osama – Bin – Laden, Mula Umer or any other Taliban has been arrested yet.
World Trade Center is no more and the stories of World Trade Center are left behind. The glory of New York has gone and there is nothing New York can do except for lamenting. But Hollywood did something else then lamenting. Hollywood made a film out of the disaster of World Trade Center and what could be the title except “World Trade Center”.
The film was released in 2006 about 5 years after the incident and it stars Nicolas Cage, Maria Bello and Michael Shannon. The film was completed in a short period of 5 months that is from October 2005 to February 2006 and was released in August 2006.
The film starts with a scene when the Port Authorities officers were patrolling and saw that the North Tower was hit they suddenly rushed towards the Tower and then second attack. The film is based on reality. It filmed all the incidents that happened that day and no doubt the director filmed it very well. The film exhibited the hopelessness of that day but there were still some heroic acts.
The film did not just show the Towers but also the condition of the whole city after the incident. There was a hush, cries, people dying, and a whole drama which can take you into the reality as you are yourself watching the scene in front of you. You will feel the trill that the people felt that day. You will feel the hopelessness; you will cry watching the people dying.
The film got popularity and has taken in over $162,000,000 Worldwide, $18,730,762 in America and Canada and also got the Best Picture and best Director Awards from Online from Online Film Fan awards. If you have not watched it yet, you must go and watch it immediately.
World Trade centre was not a child’s play and to build it was a huge task. The Twin Towers 1360 ft high were easy to see or to talk about but the construction required deep insight into every single point as the lives of millions of people were connected to it. The structural system was kept simple to avoid any unwanted complexities. The 196 ft wide facades were to all effects a cage made of steel and in prefabricated modules measuring 10 x 32 ft each that are able to resist wind stress and seismic strains without transferring stress to the core structure and distributing all the stress to the outer wall structure of the towers. In this way the danger of the breaking of structure due to wind storm or other catastrophic dangers was reduced. The structures were made light but were highly resistant.
In the manufacture of the twin towers a few points were neglected and those points became the cause of its destruction. The design missed the resistance from atmospheric agents and accidental intrusion i.e., to hit by some airbus which happened on September 2001. The design was not able to make it heat resistant and the combustion of 20,000 gallons jet fuel became a major cause of its destruction as he destruction of one part caused the whole tower to turn into pieces. The steel core and 3000 miles electrical cables also took part in the destruction. Low volumes of concrete were used to make it wind resistant but in the meantime this light structure could not stand the intrusion and the whole tower was ruined. These complexities were not considered at the time of its construction which tends to be the weak point of the design.
New York, the fabled city was superb in every field of life; it was a beacon for the best and the brighter, for the fortune seeker or anyone who was in search of an opportunity to rule the world. New York’s residents were always in need of something that gives them a better chance to proceed in life to gain success and something that is really eye-catching to see after a tiresome day.
The twin towers silently voiced it all by reflecting the optimism and energy of the city. No doubt, they were massive but were lean and clean enough to be accepted by anyone. The city is so forgetful that by 1980’s it forgot that world trade centre had been a hotly debated topic; it forgot the 1960’s when the construction of world trade center was a slow process. It also forgot 1970’s when renting new space became a problem. The city used to live in present by leaving the past behind and seeking for the bright future.
The twin towers were not just a building it was a place of dreams where the young professional invested, where people worked for earning the living, where everyone was well – paid and well – groomed, no one had to wait for an opportunity because once one gets into it one got the chance o start a new career. Everything was just perfect the business was at its peak, the families were living there, film – shooting was going on there New York and America were leading in economy. The twin towers were a place in New York where myth and reality combined and a new era started. It seemed that if you talked about New York and not about World Trade Center you were missing something. But that was all past!
To picture New York and its life before World Trade Center, The Twin Towers requires the 1960s, the decade before the towers were built. It took more than thirty years to complete this project. The first tenants of North Tower moved in 1970 and those of South Tower did so in 1980. The Twin Towers were an undeniable truth for the residents of New York; it was a fact of life.
To think of life before World Trade Centre or the Twin Towers does not require just calendar but it needs the people that were alive, the trading of this city, the rebels and the leadership, the mayor of the city, the engineers that worked on this project, the president of America and all other leaderships that took part in this project as this was not just a small project.
There were many other sky touching plazas then like the Rockefeller that was completed in 1930 with its mid and flag – studded sunken plaza and 104l ft height was a major attraction. The city was proud of its Chrysler and Empire State Buildings that were higher than any other neighbor and were touching the sky and was1250 ft high. To the southwest of Twin towers the 66- storey Woolworth Building was also a legend in the race of buildings. But Twin Towers were above all. They had got everything within them.
The twin towers gave the city a new look a new way of trading a new platform to do business and a sky high place to live in. The twin towers were 1360 ft high, the most heighted building in the city, the point of attraction and the place that gave the city a new beauty. The Twin Towers was a new blessing for the city when the economy was falling.
The Port Authority announced the selection of Yamasaki as the lead architect on September, 1962 and Roth and Sons as the associate architects, Yamasaki devised a hundred plans to make the twin towers but the Yamasaki’s original plan called for the towers to be 80 stories tall. But to meet the Port Authority requirement of about 10 million square feet space for offices the design was altered and was made 100 stories tall.
The issue of elevators was a major limiting factor in building height. The taller the building, the more elevator needed to service the building and that means consuming more space for the elevators. Yamasaki and the engineers decided to introduce a new system of sky lobby, floors where people could switch from large – capacity express elevator which serves the sky lobbies, to a local elevator that goes to floors in sections.
The sky lobbies were located on the 44th and 78th floor of each tower that increased the amount of usable space on each floor about 75 percent. Altogether, the twin towers had 95 express and local elevators. This system was inspired by the subway system of New York.
Yamasaki’s design for the Twin Towers was announced to public on 1964. The buildings were designed with narrow office windows 18 inches wide each that showed that he tried to make the occupant feel safe in building. Yamasaki’s design also included Aluminum – Alloy facades.
In addition to the Twin Towers the design included four other low – rise buildings which were built in 1970. The design of the Twin Towers was not easy to decide but by the hard work of Yamasaki this dream came true and this huge building occupied a place of 16 acres on the whole.
The Twin Towers no longer exist and there are just tales left behind. Manhattan got this skyline hall mark for just thirty years that was one of the most famous in the world. But there record – breaking height, the design and the basic fact of their presence were always subject to criticism.
The twin towers, both the North and the south were each roughly 1360 ft high, 1960 ft long on each side. Each of them had 110 floors and had 104 elevators and rested on foundations that were 69 ft into the bedrock and was a city in itself. Their construction required 200,000 tons of steel to give it flexibility so that it can endure heavy storms without breaking into pieces and 3000 miles of electrical cables to satisfy the distribution and consumption of about 80,000 KW per day. The structures were divided into three vertical zones for express elevator ascent. If we talk about the ventilation the towers design was made so to make it properly ventilated by placing 43000 windows, each 22 inch wide. And instead of walls or card boards, glass was heavily used in the structure, in total the facades required 215000 sq. ft of glass.
But before all this construction there was a need for 12,000,000 sq. ft land for the building in New York City which was not at all an easy task. The Designer Yamasaki provided 100 models for world trade centre before the two towers were selected, which presented a breakthrough configuration compromise. In the creation of Twin towers Yamasaki had to go beyond the traditional ways of construction and had to think of new ideas as this was not a simple project as other projects. This was the world’s largest project and he completed it successfully.
